Wood engraving of a Chaldean (Assyrian) mountaineer from Kurdistan employed on the excavations at Nineveh, in a pointed felt cap with a pick over his shoulder. The book, compiled from L'Illustration, says three hundred "Nestorian Chaldeans" worked with pickaxes on the digs, referring to these two figures (nos. 285 and 286).
