Villagers of Mar Yaqo with their Dominican priest, about 1880
Several hundred villagers of Mar Yaqo, a Chaldean Catholic village of the Simele district, sit in tiers on a rocky slope below the buildings of the monastery of Mar Yaqob, with men in turbans at the back and children in front; a priest in a white habit stands on a balcony above. The village and monastery were destroyed in 1988.
